Private providers

There are a range of private colleges and even  private universities available. All these operate solely on the fees they charge the students and most are profit making businesses, so you need to apply the same rules as you would if buying any other service - be a wise consumer! Fee-Help is available but you need to check with the individual institution to see if you would be eligible.

Some advantages that these courses have are that the course program is more intense and as a result you will be finishing the course and receiving your credentials earlier. This allows you to begin work and earn a living before students at university and TAFE have obtained their qualifications. Some private colleges are also able to place their graduates in work - though no provider can guarantee that.

Please note that Sydney Secondary College does not endorse any private colleges. The list is provided for the information of students, parents and the school community. It is up to the individual to check out the college to see if it meets their needs.

Ask these questions first:

  •  Most importantly make sure the course is approved by VETAB
  •  What exactly will I learn in this course?
  • Can I get Youth Allowance?
  • Is Fee-Help available?
  • Who runs the course?
  • What are the "teaching" qualifications of the course teachers?
  • How long does the course run?
  • How much will it cost?
  • Are there extras to buy, such as equipment, textbooks?
  • What is the fee structure - weekly, monthly, lump sum in advance, etc.?
  • Are there any interest or administration or bookkeeping charges?
  • Can I get a refund if I change my mind?
  • Does TAFE offer a similar course?
  • Then ask for the names of three employers that recognise the course.  Go and visit these firms.  Are they large, well known firms?  Also ring the industry association.
  • Do you offer scholarships?
